How to Tell Real Pyrite from Fake: 5 Simple Tests You Can Do at Home

The Fake Pyrite Problem in India

Pyrite has become one of the most popular crystals in India. Everyone wants it for wealth, protection, and good luck. But here is the problem. As demand went up, so did the number of sellers pushing fake pyrite. Painted metal, coated plastic, dyed glass. It is everywhere on Amazon, Meesho, and local markets.

If your pyrite is fake, it carries zero energy. You are basically wearing a costume accessory and hoping it will change your life. That is not going to work. So before you trust any pyrite product, run these five tests.

1. The Scratch Test

Real pyrite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. That means it cannot be scratched by your fingernail, a coin, or a key. Try scratching the surface with a steel nail. If it scratches easily or the coating peels off, it is fake. Genuine pyrite will resist the scratch and might even leave a mark on the nail instead.

2. The Streak Test

This is the most reliable test. Take an unglazed ceramic tile (the back of a bathroom tile works perfectly). Rub your pyrite firmly across it. Real pyrite leaves a greenish black or dark brownish black streak. If the streak is gold, yellow, or shiny, that is not pyrite. That is either painted metal or something else entirely.

3. The Weight Test

Pick up your pyrite and feel it. Real pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with a density of about 5. It feels noticeably heavy for its size. If it feels light like plastic or hollow, it is almost certainly fake. Compare it with a stone of similar size. Real pyrite should feel significantly heavier.

4. The Smell Test

This one surprises people. Rub your fingers firmly across the surface of the stone. Then smell your fingers. Real pyrite has a faint sulfur smell, similar to a struck matchstick. This happens because pyrite contains iron and sulfur. If there is no smell at all, be suspicious.

5. The Visual Check

Look closely at the surface. Real pyrite has natural metallic luster with tiny imperfections, color variations, and uneven facets. Fake pyrite looks too perfect, too uniform, and sometimes has visible glitter particles or paint. If it sparkles like craft glitter instead of having a deep metallic shine, put it down and walk away.

Bonus: The Magnet Test

Real pyrite is very slightly magnetic because of its iron content. Hold a strong magnet near your stone. If there is a very faint pull, that is a good sign. If there is zero magnetic response or a very strong pull, the stone might be fake or a different mineral entirely.

Why Authenticity Matters for Crystal Healing

Crystal healing works on the principle that natural stones carry specific vibrational frequencies. A fake stone made of plastic or painted metal has no natural frequency. It cannot protect you, attract wealth, or balance your chakras. It is just decoration.

This is exactly why every Tara Vastu anklet comes with a lab certification card. We want you to know without any doubt that what you are wearing is 100% natural pyrite. Because if you are going to set an intention with a stone, that stone better be real.

Where to Buy Genuine Pyrite in India

Always buy from sellers who provide certification. Check reviews carefully. Look for close up photos that show natural imperfections. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Natural pyrite has a real cost. Anyone selling it for pocket change is selling you something else.
